KUALA LUMPUR, May 19: DAP’s Bukit Gelugor Ramkarpal Singh has demanded that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar take action against veteran comedian Sulaiman Yassin for slapping film producer David Teo.
“Khalid is well aware that action can be taken against Sulaiman regardless of whether a police report is lodged by Teo as the video recording of what happened is obvious. As such, I call upon Khalid to take the necessary steps to arrest Sulaiman forthwith for the purpose of investigating him for the assault of Teo,” he said in a statement today.
Ramkarpal said Khalid’s failure to do so will send a message that people can get away with committing offences even when it is committed in front of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
“The IGP should know that his failure to act will result in a serious loss of confidence in the efficiency of the police force as this slapping incident, if not properly addressed, will certainly be a slap in the face of the Rule of Law in this country,” he added.
On Wednesday, Sulaiman, better known as Mat Over, slapped Teo during the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue in front of the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
“That such an incident could have happened right in front of the PM is a serious concern as it shows the poor standards of security of those in charge of the event, not to mention the obvious lack of respect Sulaiman has for the PM.
“A close viewing of the recording of the incident, which has gone viral, shows Sulaiman charging menacingly towards Teo in the presence of two police officers who were right next to Teo.
“It ought to have been obvious by then that there was a need to have restrained or apprehended Sulaiman before he reached Teo yet the said two police officers did absolutely nothing to prevent the incident from happening when they so easily could have before it happened.
“What if Sulaiman’s target was the Prime Minister instead? Would security have been so relaxed?
“Of equal importance is the question whether Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar will take action by arresting Sulaiman and recommend that he be charged the assault of Teo.
“There can be no doubt that an offence was committed regardless of what Sulaiman says. He certainly could not have been provoked by Teo as Teo’s criticisms that night (if any) were directed at the emcee, Datuk Rosyam Nor,” he said.
