Wanita UMNO asks Anwar to look into developments in Penang

NIBONG TEBAL, Sept 26 – Wanita Umno today urged Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to find out what was happening in opposition- ruled Penang, saying that development in the state helmed by a DAP-led government seemed to be focused only on the rich.

Its chief, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, said feedback received by Wanita Umno indicated that the people in Penang were disappointed with the pattern of development.

“Wanita Umno requests Datuk Seri (Anwar) to return to Penang and find out what’s happening in the state. It is saddening to know that the programmes and projects carried out by the DAP government are focused on the rich. There is no need to fly here and there in a luxury jet,” she said in an apparent reference to the private aircraft Anwar and several opposition pact leaders had used recently.

Shahrizat spoke to reporters after attending a “Salam Sayang” programme of Penang Wanita Umno in Sungai Acheh, here. Also present was Penang Umno Liaison

Committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman. The Wanita Umno leader also wanted Anwar to clarify an allegation that he would hand over the entire administration of Penang to the DAP.

“Wanita Umno wants to ask Datuk Seri (Anwar) why he is so fearful of (Penang Chief Minister) Lim Guan Eng and whether he wants to surrender the entire administration of Penang to the DAP. The voters want to know. I am a Penang-born, so I want to know too,” she said.

Asked to comment on the repeat denial by Penang Deputy Chief Minister  Datuk Mansor Othman that he had dubbed Lim as “cocky and arrogant”, Shahrizat said: “Datuk Mansor seems to be isolated now, and all alone.” She said this situation had come about because of Anwar’s fear for Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general, so much so that the opposition leader was unable to come to the defence of his people in PKR.

Earlier, in her speech, Shahrizat called on Wanita Umno to be fully prepared to face the next general election, which she said was near at hand. Wanita Umno members should go down to the ground to understand the needs of the voters and explain the party’s struggle and objectives, she said.
