KUALA LUMPUR, March 4 — Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil is leaving it to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to decide on her position as Senator.
Shahrizat, who is also the Wanita Umno head, said it was up to the Prime Minister whether to extend her term as senator which ends next month. “Everything is up to the honourable Prime Minister,” she said when approached by reporters after the non-governmental organisations’ (NGOs) 1Malaysia People’s Welfare Programme (Kar1sma), here today.
The programme, which was being held for the first time, was launched by the Prime Minister and attended by almost 20,000 people including 1,627 representatives from the NGOs throughout the country.
A news daily (Sin Chew) has speculated that Shahrizat might not be reappointed as a senator when her term expires on April 8. Shahrizat was appointed a senator on April 9, 2009.
Shahrizat was linked to the issue on the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC), which was headed by her husband, Datuk Dr Mohamed Salleh Ismail, which was involved in the beef valley project, National Feedlot Centre in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan.
It attracted the limelight after the Accountant-General’s report 2010 pointed out several weaknesses in the project aimed at raising the country’s meat production and reducing the nation’s dependency on meat imports.
