Private apology is good enough, Khairy tells DAP
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2: Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar today said that he will not issue a public apology for the chaos created by his members outside DAP’s headquarters, last month.
This is because a private apology has already been conveyed to DAP’s Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming for damage to property caused by the wing’s members who protested outside the DAP headquarters on May 22, said Khairy.
“Whether it is private or public, it is the same thing. I have already said that as far as the damage to DAP property is concerned, I have conveyed my apologies and I have offered to pay for that.
“I think that should be sufficient,” the Youth and Sports Minister told a press conference today.
He was responding to Ong’s request for a public apology from the Umno Youth chief over the matter.
DAP has refused to accept Khairy’s apology, insisting that it should be made public.
The Umno Youth had staged two separate protests against Penang DAP’s Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer over the Umno celaka remark.
On May 22, Federal Territories Umno Youth had gathered outside the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, and allegedly threatened to burn the building and damaged the signboard.
On May 21, Penang Umno Youth had barged into the Penang legislative assembly to look for Rayer, who was not around.
The protests were triggered when Rayer reportedly accused several Penang Umno leaders of playing with racial sentiments during a demonstration.
Rayer, however, refused to apologise for his remark. He claimed the word celaka only meant “damn it” was not calling Umno leaders haram jadah.
