Gang-robbery: Jail, whipping for two friends

PETALING JAYA, Sept 13: Two friends were sentenced to five years jail and given three strokes of the cane each by the Sessions Court here today for robbing a woman at a car park of a shopping centre here.

Judge Mohammed Mokhzani Mokhtar handed down the sentence on Mohd Faizul Nizam Hamzah, 30, and Mohamad Faizal Mohd Sharif, 26, after the two men changed their plea to guilty today.

Mohd Faizul Nizam, who is a mechanic, and trader Mohamad Faizal, had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge. They were ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of their arrest on Jan 8 this year.

The two men were charged with committing the robbery on one Jama’ayah Mohamed, 53, when armed with a weapon which looked like a pistol, at the car park of Jaya One here, at 2.39 am last Jan 8.

The woman was robbed of two handphones, RM750, two credit cards, a gold ring and a gold chain.

The charge, under Section 395 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397 of the same law, provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and fine, or whipping, upon conviction.

In mitigation, the two men, represented by lawyer Datuk Suraj Singh, said they were remorse and the breadwinners for their families.
